The Re-named Saturday Sit Down: Edition 2 – High Heel Gal

This weeks victim guest is the fabulous High Heel Gal from The High Heel Diaries.  Definitely a blogger I would never mark all as read.  A fabulous writer, teacher and all round great girl!

You know the drill.  Nine questions and scenarios a little different to the usual things you’d get on an about page.

If you could be a superhero, what would you call yourself and what super power would you have?

A friend and I once had this idea.  We’d been sitting at the bar for a few hours and the juices were settling in.  I had, what I thought (and still think) is a brilliant idea.  I would invent these special glasses and call them something like “de-drunkers.”  After a few drinks, if a guy starts hitting on you, you want to be sure he’s hot, right?  But you may not be in the right state of mind to do so.  You put on your “dedrunkers” and viola! you see what he really looks like, or how he would look when you’re not intoxicated.  I think this would cut down on the number of women who go home with fugly men and then wake up the next morning and think “WTF was I thinking?!”  I don’t think this necessarily qualifies as superhero-ish, but anything that saves women from some booty-action with uglies is considered a heroic deed in my book!

How would you explain the concept of blogging to a 5 year old…in no more than 2 sentences (using correct grammar and no 50 word sentences!)?

Blogging is like an etch-a-sketch, only with more words and less pictures.

If you were on a blind / internet arranged date and the guy you were with was completely the opposite of what you expected, and has a snaggletooth, what extent would you go to to get out of the date?  Things to consider:  You’re already on the date, in a town you aren’t that familiar with and you’ve forgotten your phone.

Well, this scenario sort of happened to me, so I won’t have to play the “what if” card here!  Upon seeing this snaggly man, I immediately knew I wanted out.  Like now.  But, I’m always early to things and had arrived at the bar first and sucked down half a glass of wine before ol’ photoshop could sit down.  Of course, I had my phone, so I soon after excused myself to the bathroom and sent a text like this to my friend, Craig, who I knew was out: “Date sucks.  Need to leave now.  Will meet you anywhere.”  Unfortunately, my friend Craig is not in my phone as “Craig,” but by his last name.  As soon as I hit “send” from the bathroom stall, I realized that the real person as “Craig” in my phone was a guy I was supposed to be out with that night, but had cancelled on because snaggly-fang appeared much more dashing – in photos, that were obviously airbrushed.

Had I not had a phone I probably could’ve saved myself a lot of embarrassment.  I still would have wasted the 2.5 hours on the date, because I’m not that mean of a person.  But it was brutal.  Bottom line: Dating sucks.

If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that person be?

Diane Sawyer.  I would love to be a news reporter and travel the world.

What do you most value in other people?

A sense of humor.  If you can laugh about life, then everything else just falls into place.

If you could have room full of any one thing, what would it be?

Pickles.  Jars of kosher dill pickles.  Spears, hamburger slices, stackers – doesn’t matter.  However, I might need someone to open the jars for me.  Those fuckers can be hard to open!

What is your favorite tradition from your childhood and will you pass it on to your future children (if you want any that is!)?

I grew up in the country, so ever since third grade, I would show cows at the county fair.  I had to bathe them, clean up shit, walk them, feed them and love them, even when they didn’t love me (stepped on me, dragged me down the driveway…).  It was fun and taught me the value of hard work.  However, I don’t plan to live in the country with my future children (maybe ‘burbs).  So as long as they do something that teaches them independence and strong-will (like sports, dance, etc.) then I’m cool with that.

In your opinion, can an act be truly selfless?

Totally.  For example, I’m a teacher, not for the money or because I get the summers off, but because I genuinely want to help others achieve their goals.  Of course, I’d love to get paid more, and I’ve thought about leaving the profession on more than one occasion, but I don’t think I’d truly be happy if I wasn’t serving others in some way.  I guess that carries into my relationships too, as I tend to want to give without expecting anything in return.  Although some people tend to do things for the good of others might have alternative motives (ones that benefit themselves), I ultimately think that the true “selfless” people are those who put the needs of others before themselves.  The trick is remembering that you are important too ;)

If I come back to you at the start of 2011, what do you hope to have achieved and where do you hope to be by then?

I turn 30 this year, so 2011 will hopefully be a fresh start for me.  I would love to get more of my writing published, as it’s been a few years since that’s happened.  I also hope to have a new job – still teaching, but at a school with more stability.  On the relationship front, I’m not sure.  Right now I’m not ready to form a deep connection with anyone, but that’s not to say it won’t happen, because these things happen when we least expect it.  I guess ultimately, I just want to be happy with all aspects of my life!

Yes, I LOVE the de-drunkers idea! It’s basically the complete opposite of beer goggles (or WINE goggles, in my case!)
