Today’s post was actually going to be full of doom, gloom and depression! But I changed my mind and popped that into the “drafts” section…hopefully you’ll never have to read it.
Instead…well, it’s just something else!
I was reading Larissa’s blog yesterday where she’d posted about comments (or lack of) and other bloggers and I 100% agreed with her and felt the need therapise (I’ve possibly just made up a new word)) myself about it.
I follow 62 blogs…yes 62 could be seen as excessive, but it’s okay!! This number is forever increasing because I love reading. I struggle to find books I enjoy (that do not involve some form of smut) and so blogs are the best form of reading for me because their content is forever changing. (Technology allowing) I read pretty much every post that these 62 bloggers put out there to be read and ensure that I comment on at least 75% of the posts (the other 25% is generally where either I genuinely cannot find a thing to say…or some naughty sausage stole my comment (direct from my brain)).
Now, I don’t want to upset anyone but I just wanted to put these 2 things out there – they’re things I’m confused about (and this was a very long around getting to the point).
Lurkers (is that how that’s spelt?)
Why do people lurk? I obviously don’t mind people “lurking”, although it is a tiny bit creepy because it feels like someone’s peeking through my window when I’m getting changed or something. Now, my feed reader stats tell me that I have 74 rss subscriptions (or whatever you call them)…yet only 23 of these have regularly been “active” (it also told me that, I haven’t added up the comments or anything) on my blog. 51 subscribed but unactive seems a little excessive, don’t you think? I challenge these lurkers to get in touch and un-lurk (hmm, sounds funny) themselves!! Leave a comment, send an email…whatever you like. I wouldn’t want to think that you are secretly religiously following me and I don’t even know who you are.
“Celebrity” Bloggers
So, my second little confusion is Larissa point. A good analagy would be unrequited love! You fall in love with someone, do everything you can to get them to notice you yet, alas, they just don’t seem to see you (they can’t see the wood for the trees springs to mind). Anyhoo, this is how I feel with blogging sometimes! You know when you absolutely love a blog to death and comment your little heart out on every post….but they never respond in any shape or form…and in fact, you never see them comment anywhere? Those are the ones that get to me a little bit. Fair enough if you actually see them interacting somewhere – then I know my blog isn’t for them or something. but when you never see them anywhere else what does that mean? I know my little comment might not mean much in their big important world, but it’s my little comment that added to the rest of the little comments to make a rather large number! I just wish these people weren’t so interesting.
Hmm…no moral…no point! Perhaps I should’ve gone down the gloomy post route afterall!? Tomorrow I shall bring bloggy love to all my favourites and maybe even something inappropriate!

{ 34 comments… read them below or add one }
I follow like 90 blogs.
I read them all but I really only comment on a few.
Matt’s last blog post..Scare tactics*
@ Matt – you tend to comment-reply though so that definitely makes up for not being able to comment all the time. You’re not eloof – you’re a superstar!
like u i follow many but i have now learnt who responds and whoe doesn’t so i merely comment on those who seem to actually acknowledge us littlings.its not like u asking for a massive response but every once in while it hink it would be nice for bloggers to jst acknowledge their followers!!
miss rambles’s last blog post..”i like brothas but am not into dating them”
because they’re so full of themselves.
ahem, sorry, pretty sensitive about it due to being treated like that a lot. The easiest way is unsubscribe for me lol
andhari’s last blog post..Sitting In Front Of The Laptop For 8 Hours…
@ Miss Rambles – I find it funny replying to comments, there’s always something that needs to be added after a comment. I try to comment as often as poss, but sometimes I’m late!!
@ Andie – Hehe, a little hostility miss?? I have actually unsubscribed from a few recently and replaced them with new ones! x
I don’t follow that many blogs, but I try to comment on the ones I do. Unless there are already lots of comments, then I usually assume that I can’t add much to the conversation. Or if they never respond then I figure screw ‘em.
@ TC (not Top Cat!!) – As long as you comment on mine that’s fine! I will always reply. You shouldn’t just assume you have nothing to add!! Everyone always has something they can say!
I like your blog and think you’re pretty fabulous. I always read with an accent, the way I think you might sound. lol
@ Courtlynn – lol…thanks! I may actually do an audio thing on here at some point, but I think I might get stage fright and not know what to say!! x P.s I hope you don’t imagine me to sound like the queen!! I don’t! x
I have to admit I am a major lurker, most of the time I am reading blogs at work and don’t have the time to comment or just don’t have anything to say.
I read quite a few blogs including the ones that follow me so I try to read them because they are taking the time out to read mine but I don’t comment on every one.
Leetid’s last blog post..Happy Birthday Blog
@ leetid – Being at work is an excellent reason!! I sneak it all in on my iPhone or at lunch! I’m not sure I’d fit everything in otherwise! X
I’ve only recently gotten off the read everything, comment everywhere, reply to everyone’s comments bandwagon. It’s so HARD! Because I love everyone, and I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings or make anyone think I don’t love them anymore or whatever!
And I’m not one of those hoity-toity people who thinks her blog is better than everyone’s and cannot BOTHERED with the little people. I just can’t fit all the blog in one day’s worth of reading!
So, sometimes I let a few of one blogger’s pile up and read them all at once…some I comment on, and some I don’t, depending on if I have something constructive to the conversation to say (so I suppose technically I’m lurking on those posts)! I used to try to go to all the blogs I follow and comment on every one, but I know it’s lame to say something just to say something, you know?
Whew, I could go on and on, but I’ll just stop while I’m (maybe?) ahead!
Sassy Britches’s last blog post..My Life In Pictures: Purple
@ SB – You crack me up! You’re a totally different kettle of fish my first bloggy BFF! You take the time to send every commenter (unless it’s just me!?) a personal email! – how can that not be classed as a good blogger filled with love!? x
@Jen – its a hard when everyone can see my computer so they can see what I am up to!!!!
Leetid’s last blog post..This is …. is back
You shouldve done the gloomy post! Lol! No I’m jking!
Love & something inappropriate huh? Ill be interested to find out what that entails.
Aww! :giggles: I <3 u jen!! If I was on your side of the world I’d hug you right now! *BIG HUGS!!*
Larissa’s last blog post..An Ode to Blog Commenting
I follow a ton of blogs and keep them all in my reader, so I read most of them on a regular basis (i.e. during work). I love getting comments and generally assume other people feel the same way.
I wouldn’t normally stop following a blog I like, but there was one blogger I started following from 20SB who wrote a post wondering why random people were reading her blog so I un-followed her. Why would you join 20SB if you don’t want people reading your blog? I’m sorry, I’m bitter. I swear I wasn’t a weird lurker, I just thought she was funny!
Mara’s last blog post..Lisa Frank
@ Mara – bad bloggers!! I would never moan about being follwed!! I’m a massive fan of interaction so would never complain when it actually happened!!
@ Larissa – Yeah, tomorrow will be all full of love and stuff (and that inappropriate thing I’ve promised WOO HOO). Doom and gloom doesn’t really fit me, even when I am miserable I pretend to be a chirpy little thing!!
@ Leetid – see, I’m fortunate to have my own office and I face the door so my screen isn’t visable!!
I’m a comment whore. I can’t help it. Why go to the trouble of reading something if I’m not going to put my 2 cents in? Because it’s all about me, really…
LiLu’s last blog post..Awesomeness Abound: Your Loony Bin IS Fine, Benny Lava
@ Lilu – I was actually going to link you as my favourite (but I thought you’d start to think I was stalking you!) interactive kinda bloggy person!! You have it down to a fine art and I see you on pretty much every new blog I discover! Do you do any work? hehe x
I know what you mean about the ‘celebrity’ bloggers; I guess the problem is when they’re too big you just never get the time but I have to say it’s quite disheartening! And the lurkers? What’s the point? I thought the whole point of the blogosphere was to be interactive?
Serena’s last blog post..Jealousy is a bitter pill to swallow…
I LOVE-LOVE it when you comment. . . in fact, you’re one of my favorite commenters and when i see that you HAVE commented, I race to read what you’ve written to me. . .
Just like I RACE to read your blog when it’s out!
Lurkers actually “get” me too. . . I have some people who subscribe to me who have NEVER commented. weirdness.
JayCee Leigh’s last blog post..Happy Birthday-Momma’s Day, Momma!
@ Jaycee – Lol…hmm, are my comments that great?
I just get a bit mystified about the lurkers, I like people to know I like what they write!! x
I subscribe to 363 blogs. No joke.
Maxie’s last blog post..yes, I totally stole this topic from alexa.
@ Maxie – no-effing-way!? Do you get any work done? I think I might have a breakdown if I had that many!!
As you are acutely aware I do not hide outside your window peeking in. I stand outside the window pounding away for you to let me in and waving with a big cheesy smile on my face. All that is happening while you change.
When I’m a creepy creepster like that don’t you kind of wish I would just lurk? I thought so.
JPP’s last blog post..The P Word
@ jpp – It migtve been you I was referring to there!!
@ jassie – that’s for saying hi!! Comments don’t always gave to be witty – we can do sensible too! X
I’m a lurker, I follow about 50 or so blogs but I only comment on a few. It’s not that I don’t enjoy what people read, I do occasionally leave a comment or two. I just find it difficult to try and put a witty comment on every persons blog I read.
Though seeing as I enjoy being a comment whore, if I see someone question something, or ask for a comment I’ll put my opinion in.
I’m loving the new blog layout, Jenn! Mine also seriously needs a make over.
On to your post: I feel the same way about lurkers and celebrity bloggers. Some of my lurkers, though, send me messages once in a while to tell me they read my blog and the reason they don’t leave comments is, well, they don’t have a blog.
There are a few celebrity bloggers that I follow. The reason being, my purpose in blogging is to meet friends and some celebrity bloggers have little time to cultivate that friendship.
@ td – a change is always good!! As long as we never become “celebrity” bloggers the world will be ok!
I know my feed reader says I have more following then actual “followers”…I soo badly want to know who they are!! I’m like that though!
Lady Jane’s last blog post..Totally Awkward Tuesday: Who the hell is this?
@ LJ – I know that feeling so well!! This past has actually shown me who a few of the extras are though so it worked out quite well! x
I lurk because I read at work. When I read in Google Reader it shows up as google content (harmless) on the security reports. By clicking over and commenting it just showed that for these few minutes I was wasting time. So I can’t do it too much.
12ontheinside’s last blog post..I’m ‘armless
@ 12ontheinside – Work definitely sucks sometimes!!! Thanks commenting though!! x
